NMC Code of Conduct for Nurses: The 4 Themes Explained with Examples

Disclaimer: Revalidation Copilot is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Always refer to the official NMC Code for the full standards of conduct, performance, and ethics.

Every reflective account you write for NMC revalidation needs to connect back to The Code — the NMC's standards of conduct, performance, and ethics for nurses, midwives, and nursing associates.

But here's the thing most nurses don't realise: you don't need to quote the Code verbatim. You just need to show how your CPD, feedback, or experience relates to one of its four themes.

This guide explains each theme in plain English, with real clinical examples you can adapt for your own reflective accounts.

The 4 Themes of the NMC Code

ThemeCore Principle
1. Prioritise PeoplePut the interests of people receiving care first
2. Practise EffectivelyMaintain the knowledge and skills for safe practice
3. Preserve SafetyProtect people from harm and manage risks
4. Promote Professionalism and TrustUphold the reputation of the profession

Theme 1: Prioritise People

What it means: The person receiving care comes first. You treat people as individuals, respect their dignity, involve them in decisions about their care, and respond to their needs and preferences — not just the task at hand.

What the NMC expects: You provide care that is compassionate, respectful, and person-centred. You actively listen, obtain consent, respect confidentiality, and advocate for the people in your care.

📝 How to use it in a reflective account

CPD activity: Dementia awareness training

What you learned: How to use validation therapy instead of reality orientation for patients with advanced dementia.

Code connection: "This CPD directly supports Theme 1 (Prioritise People) by helping me provide person-centred care tailored to each patient's cognitive level. I now approach distressed patients with dementia differently — meeting them where they are rather than correcting their reality."

Other CPD that links here: Communication skills, end-of-life care, consent training, equality and diversity, mental capacity act, safeguarding adults.

Theme 2: Practise Effectively

What it means: You keep your knowledge and skills up to date. You use evidence-based practice, assess people's needs properly, document accurately, and work within your competence.

What the NMC expects: You're accountable for your own practice. You reflect on feedback and make changes. You use the best available evidence to inform your care. You share learning with your team.

📝 How to use it in a reflective account

CPD activity: Venepuncture annual competency update

What you learned: Updated guidelines on vein selection, reduced repeat attempts, and new documentation requirements.

Code connection: "This update connects to Theme 2 (Practise Effectively) by maintaining my clinical competency in a core skill. The new documentation standards also improve the accuracy of my records, reducing the risk of missed follow-up for patients."

Other CPD that links here: Clinical skills updates, mandatory training, journal clubs, courses on specific conditions, prescribing updates, wound care training.

Theme 3: Preserve Safety

What it means: You recognise and respond to risks to people's safety. You raise concerns when something isn't right, follow safety protocols, and use incident reporting systems. You also look after your own health and fitness to practise.

What the NMC expects: You practise within your competence. You escalate concerns promptly. You use evidence to inform risk assessments. You complete safety-related CPD. You maintain your own health so you can practise safely.

📝 How to use it in a reflective account

Feedback received: Colleague noted that handover information was occasionally incomplete during night-day transitions.

What you learned: Structured communication tools like SBAR improve information transfer at shift change.

Code connection: "This feedback links to Theme 3 (Preserve Safety). Incomplete handover creates a risk of missed information affecting patient care. I now use SBAR format for all verbal handovers and document key points in the nursing notes before leaving the shift."

Other CPD that links here: Infection prevention, medication safety, incident reporting training, moving and handling, fire safety, health and wellbeing for staff.

Theme 4: Promote Professionalism and Trust

What it means: You uphold the reputation of the nursing profession. You act with integrity, maintain appropriate boundaries, and are honest and trustworthy. You take responsibility for your actions.

What the NMC expects: You treat people fairly without discrimination. You maintain professional boundaries. You are open about your fitness to practise. You represent the profession positively in your conduct, on and off duty.

📝 How to use it in a reflective account

Practice experience: Managing a complaint from a patient's family about communication delays

What you learned: The importance of acknowledging concerns openly and addressing them promptly rather than being defensive.

Code connection: "This experience connects to Theme 4 (Promote Professionalism and Trust). By listening to the family's concerns without defensiveness and updating our ward's communication protocol, I helped restore trust and demonstrated accountability — key professional standards."

Other CPD that links here: Fitness to practise, raising concerns (whistleblowing), social media guidance, equality and diversity, duty of candour.

💡 The common mistake to avoid

Don't try to link every reflection to all four themes. Pick the one that genuinely fits and explain it in one or two sentences. The NMC isn't looking for an essay — they're looking for evidence that you've thought about how your learning connects to your professional standards.

Quick Reference: Which Theme Does Your CPD Link To?

If your CPD or experience is about…Use this theme
Communication, consent, dignity, person-centred careTheme 1 — Prioritise People
Clinical skills, evidence-based practice, documenting, accountabilityTheme 2 — Practise Effectively
Risk, infection control, medication safety, raising concerns, your healthTheme 3 — Preserve Safety
Professional boundaries, honesty, integrity, discrimination, social mediaTheme 4 — Promote Professionalism and Trust
Any feedback from a patient or colleagueDepends on content, but often Theme 1 or 4
Mandatory training (resus, fire, manual handling)Theme 3 — Preserve Safety

Do You Need to Quote the Code?

You don't need to copy-paste paragraphs from the Code into your reflective account. The NMC guidance says you should "consider how your reflection links to the Code" — which means demonstrating that you've connected your learning to the professional standards.

A single sentence is usually enough: "This CPD links to Theme 2 (Practise Effectively) because it improved my clinical skills in [x], which I apply directly to patient care."
