If your revalidation deadline is approaching and life gets in the way, the NMC is about to give you more breathing room. The current eight-week extension cap is increasing to 12 weeks for anyone with a valid need.
The change was announced by the NMC on 21 July 2026 as part of a broader package of revalidation updates. The new 12-week extension is designed for registrants facing ill health, parental leave, or bereavement.
Currently, if you cannot meet your revalidation deadline, you can request an extension of up to eight weeks. The NMC can also grant a longer extension in exceptional circumstances, but this has been the default cap.
The new proposals increase that standard cap to 12 weeks. The NMC has described this as improving access to revalidation for professionals who face genuine barriers to completing on time.

The full consultation, running September to December 2026, will define the exact criteria. But the NMC's Council papers make clear this is about genuine need, not convenience.
The application process is expected to remain similar to the current one. You will need to submit a request through your NMC Online account before your revalidation deadline passes. The NMC will assess your circumstances against the criteria.
If the consultation proposals are adopted, expect the new process to include clearer guidance on what evidence you need to provide to demonstrate a valid need.
Returning from maternity or parental leave is a vulnerable time for revalidation compliance. You need to log 450 practice hours and 35 hours of CPD within the three-year cycle, but a period of leave can leave you scrambling to catch up.
The extra four weeks on the extension cap means you have nearly three months from your original deadline to finalise your portfolio, arrange your reflective discussion, and get confirmation.
The 12-week extension is about the deadline, not the requirements. You still need to meet all the standard revalidation criteria: 450 practice hours, 35 hours CPD, five reflective accounts, a reflective discussion, and confirmation. An extension gives you more time to complete them, not an exemption from any of them.
