For the first time, the NMC's professional Code is set to address artificial intelligence and digital technology directly. The evidence review that informed the new draft Code found that emerging technologies were "the most urgent issue" for the regulator to address.
The NMC news release from 21 July 2026 states that the new Code will include standards on the "safe and effective use of digital and other technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)." The regulator also plans new guidance on using technology effectively.
The NMC conducted a year-long evidence review that included a survey with 13,757 responses from professionals and the public. The findings on technology were clear. Both groups recognised the potential of AI and digital tools to improve care, but they shared real concerns about losing the human element of nursing judgment.
Professionals told the NMC they wanted clearer standards on what counts as safe and effective use of technology. The public wanted reassurance that technology would not replace the clinical reasoning and compassion of registered professionals.

The NMC has not published the draft Code yet — that comes during the consultation from September to December 2026. But based on the evidence review findings, we can expect standards that cover:

The public consultation findings published in the Council papers reveal that patients and the public are broadly positive about technology in healthcare, but they want safeguards. They want to know how their data is used, who is accountable when technology gets it wrong, and they want the human element of care preserved.
